Several years ago, our family rented a house that had a basement apartment under ours. The young couple who lived below us were quiet and unobtrusive. Their dog, however, was not. Cody was a typical black lab; a big, tail thumping extrovert. He loved to greet us by planting his huge paws on our chest. Our dog Tasha, an English Setter mix, was a kindred spirit. Because she shared the yard with Cody, they soon became fast friends. Read More A Final Offering to a Furry Friend – Guideposts.
Among my many blessings I count long-lasting friendships—two women especially, who are like angels in my life. On an October day in France, I was with them both in a wonderful way, something I could have never anticipated. Mireille has been my French pen pal since high school, 60 years ago. In 1989 I visited her in the seaside resort of Croix de Vie. “Would you like to see our lovely church of St. Croix?” she asked as we wandered through the village. It had been a long time since I’d gone into a church for something other than a

The phone was ringing inside, but I couldn’t put my hands on my front door keys—not in the dark with an armload of Christmas presents. I dropped the shopping bags and fished around in my purse. Finally. I unlocked the door and grabbed the phone. It was my mama wondering if she could still expect me for dinner. “You sound stressed,” she said. I never could hide anything from Mama. I was worn out. Six mornings a week I did the Jennifer Show, a live variety show in Branson, Missouri. Every performance meant two hours of singing and dancing. The

One brochure was all it took for my wife, Judy, and me to fall in love with Hawaii. Maui at Christmastime! We were there with our two kids on our dream vacation. Waves crashed right outside our hotel room. The ocean called to me on the balcony. The sky was cloudless, a brilliant blue. This really was paradise. “Don’t even unpack,” I said to the family. “Let’s hit the beach before the sun goes down.” Judy grabbed some towels, and we were off. I led the way to an ancient lava rock wall that had formed on the beach. “Follow

I couldn’t believe my eyes: “Mom, is that really me?” In the mirror stood a happy young woman in the most beautiful wedding dress I’d ever seen. “The one and only,” Mom said. “This is your big day.” Right at this very moment, friends and family were taking their seats in the lovely church my fiancé and I had chosen. Dad waited to escort me up the aisle. I’d tied white satin bows on the pews, and arranged white and lavender flowers by the altar. Lavender, to match the bridesmaids dresses. It all seemed like a dream, especially because this

Temperatures dropped, but no matter. Our house was warm as toast. I put finishing touches on the holiday decorations. Jackson, our Yorkshire terrier, watched me hang my stocking, then Bill’s. He cocked his head. “Do you think I’d forget you on Christmas Eve?” I pulled out the plaid stocking with “Jackson” embroidered at the top and hung it next to ours. Jackson wagged his tail. He might not have been able to read his name, but after 15 years he knew his stocking. I snaked some garland into the hallway. A pile of Christmas cards lay on the side table

With every nerve in my body tensed, I hurried down the dark streets of San Francisco’s Mission District. Frightening even in the daytime, the neighborhood took on a sinister life of its own in the early morning hours. Only an emergency would have gotten me into those filthy alleyways at 2 a.m., and that was exactly why I was there that night in 1956. Clutched in my hand was my third-grade report card. It had to be signed for school the next day; “No excuses,” my teacher had warned. So I had to find my mother. Read More An Unlikely

Baseball is a tradition in my family. Some of my best memories growing up were the days my dad took my brother and me on the 90-minute drive to San Francisco to see the San Francisco Giants play at Candlestick Park. We saw a lot of baseball history being made, like when Willie Mays and the Giants won the National League pennant in 1962. When I had my first child, Zach, Paw—as Zach called him—had another youngster to school in all things baseball. Unfortunately, by the time Zach was old enough to go to games Paw could no longer go.

Sports have been part of my life ever since I was a little girl in Gloversville, New York. I was in the pool at the Y every chance I got. I begged my parents for a bike like the big kids, but I was five and had to start with training wheels. It was a great day when Daddy took those wheels off. “Here you go,” he said. He gave me a big push on my back. His hands were gentle, but strong. I knew he believed I could do it. There I was, holding on, holding on, wobbling on

What made me ask my wife about angels that Saturday morning, I couldn’t say. Anne and I were just finishing up our breakfast in the kitchen. “Honey, I have a question for you,” I said, looking her in the eye. “Do you believe in guardian angels?” Anne seemed puzzled for a moment, then regained her composure. “I believe in myself!” she announced. Between the two of us, Anne was the practical one. She had a good sense of her own abilities, and there was very little she couldn’t handle. I, on the other hand, had always relied on higher powers

My girlfriend, Dawn, and I stayed out late into the night not long after New Year’s Day 1996. It was snowing heavily when we got into my car, and we decided to go only as far as my mother’s house, about 10 miles away. I drove slowly, the headlights of my compact boring white tunnels in the swirling flakes. Around 1:30 a.m., about a half hour after setting out, we turned onto Mom’s road in a rural area near the northern Minnesota town of Walker. There were only a couple of dwellings on the two-mile stretch leading to her house,

“You can read many stories of supernatural encounters with angels here.” Admin Hanging in my grandmother’s house was a picture that has left a lasting impact on me. It was titled “The Guardian,” and it featured a very large angel with a comforting expression and outreached hands hovering near a small boy and girl as they walked over a precariously dangerous bridge. The simple framed print brought great comfort and security to my heart when I was a little girl and propelled my imaginative mind into the awesome arena of angels. In recent years, the study of angels has continued

I know a little bit about this subject, having two incredible sons of my own. But we always look at life differently from the other side of it. My boys are grown. I’m still parenting, but in a completely different way. Mine now is one of influence. Thankfully, both boys still come to me for that influence. There is no greater joy than seeing boys become God-honoring young men. I’m thankful to have a front-row seat with my sons. via 10 Things I Would Do If I Were Raising a Son Today.

Jesus has been betrayed again—this time by wayward denominations that question the truth of the Bible and reject Christian morality. I believe we are living in the days of the Great Apostasy. Whether we are in the early stages or nearing the end will be known only in hindsight. But that we are in the throes of the greatest “falling away” the church has ever experienced is clear. via Are We Living in the Days of the Great Apostasy?.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit isn’t complicated or spooky. Let these simple steps be your guide. Some people have suggested that the baptism in the Holy Spirit was only for the early disciples who needed an extra “charge” or a unique gift to get Christianity started. Well, we need it too! God’s power is for today. You can have your own personal experience with the Spirit by following these guidelines: via How to Tap Into the Power of God.
Knowing your areas of giftedness is important, but what matters more to God is your yieldedness. Finally, the day had come. The servant stood before the door of the manor house with a sense of profound thanksgiving. Long he had hoped and prayed for the opportunity to join the household of the one who rescued him from a life of destruction and then distraction. Now nothing was more important than using the culinary skills and talents he had honed so sacrificially for the benefactor who had done so much for him. The door opened. Standing before him was the lord

Don’t spend your life in so much fear of making a mistake that you never do anything. There are critical times in our lives when we especially need to know we are hearing clearly from God. It isn’t always easy to know His voice from that of our own emotional reasoning. But I know from experience that God can open doors of opportunity that no one can close, and He can also close doors that we cannot open. via How to Overcome Fear With Faith.

Faith Life Church Our decisions are important. They are like forks in the road. But we don’t have to make decisions on our own, because the One inside of us knows the past, present, and future, and He will tell us which way to go and what to do. Every child of God can be led by the Holy Spirit, bearing witness with their spirit, day in and day out. He desires to help us, and when we understand how much He cares, we become convinced that He will use His great ability on our behalf.
Faith Life Church The Holy Spirit, speaking through Peter in his epistle said, “…some things are hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:16 “They’re a good person; why are they sick?” “What about Paul’s thorn?” “Doesn’t God have a purpose for everything that happens?” “What about poor old Job?” In this series, these questions and others are examined in the light of what the scriptures in question actually said as well as comparing them to other verses with which they must

Faith Life Church Mark 16:17 “And these signs shall follow them that believe…” God bears witness to His Word being spoken and acted on and lived by His people. The way He “signs” it is by what men call miracles and wonders, gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit. The miracles we read about in the Book of Acts belong to us, the church, today just like it belonged to them. In this series, we’re talking about miracles: feeding on them, camping on them, and reading about them. The Lord is preparing us, getting our thinking right, and getting us

Faith Life Church There’s more to prospering in God than just giving offerings and making confessions. We sow where, when, and how He tells us to sow, by faith. But that’s not the end of the story… After we sow, we wait by faith. Then, at the proper time and season and place, we must reap our harvest by faith. Just like the farmer in the natural has a role to play in the harvest, we have a role to play in the spiritual. As you listen to this series, let the Lord teach you how to harvest – and
