In recent years, the Sun has been at its weakest state in more than a century.
Low solar activity impacts Earth’s weather/climate through several different mechanisms, the most immediately noticeable one being the effect on the jet streams.
Jet streams are narrow bands of strong wind in the upper levels of the atmosphere. On Earth, there are four primary jet streams: two polar jet streams near the north and south poles, and two subtropical jet streams closer to the equator.
Low solar activity leads to a weaker, more meandering jet stream. This can lead to cold snaps in one region of the world but at the same time cause warmer periods in another.
But, discussion of the effects of solar activity is no longer permitted in scientific debates about the climate or the weather.
