The film follows four families that bring their troubled children to the camp. "Success Camp" is fictional, but fact-based, Phillippi said.

The camp deals with troubled kids from around the country who are either sentenced by a judge or brought in by their families. Phillippi said that while researching his role, he met an 8-year-old who was sent to the camp after burning down his home and stealing a car. Kids might stay for a month or more at the camp and parents are expected to be on hand for at least the first weekend so they can learn how to deal with their children.

It's not a prison atmosphere, he said, but it's not a typical summer camp either.

"They don't handle you with kid gloves," Phillippi said. "You're told what to do and then you're going to do it."
