Still in his junior year, the Oregon Ducks’ Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota appears to be more than ready for the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day against the Florida State Seminoles – gearing up not with just a helmet and shoulder pads, but with the complete armor of God.
A Closer LookPerhaps one of the most successful Pac-12 quarterbacks in NCAA history, and becoming the first Oregon Duck and Hawaii-born athlete to win the Heisman, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound quarterback – a staunch Christian – received an astonishing 88.4 percent of first-place votes, accumulating the second-highest percentage of possible points (90.9 percent) in the history of the highly esteemed college football trophy.
Winning all but four of the 39 games he’s played as a Duck, Mariota’s stats continue to fill the record books, as the AP Player of the Year finished first in the NCAA this year in both passer and total quarterback rating, yards per attempt (10.2) and fewest interceptions (2), while topping the Pac-12 list in touchdown passes (38). But even more impressive than his three Pac-12 All-Conference First Team seasons on the field is Mariota’s unshakeable faith and Christian witness everywhere he goes – from the gridiron to the locker room and to the community.
