One of my favorite passages in the Bible is in Joshua 4 where the Lord had the people of Israel take 12 stones and build a memorial after the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. These stones were to be a memorial (a reminder) to coming generations not to forget what God did and who He is. It was also to be a reminder to all peoples of the earth concerning the one true God.
