One morning when I was planning to meet my wife for breakfast, I decided to ride my bicycle to the restaurant. As I was cruising along, I popped off a curb to cross the street. But then something unexpected happened. The front of my bike went up, but the wheel kept on going. It happened so quickly that I couldn’t even brace myself. I did a face plant in the middle of the street and was knocked unconscious for a few moments. When I came to, someone was asking me, “Are you OK?” The next day, I felt the full impact of my mishap. I never saw it coming.

The book of Joshua tells the story of a horrible defeat Israel never saw coming. It came right on the heels of a great victory for the Israelites. Their wanderings in the wilderness were over, and they stood poised and ready to enter the Promised Land. Their opponents were big, but their opportunities were even bigger.
