By Julie Fidler The world’s honeybees are in rapid decline. Due to pesticide exposure, disease, and more, there are 70% fewer of them now than there were just 70 years ago. A number of hotels in San Francisco are sympathetic to the plight of these vital pollinators, and have turned their rooftops into sanctuaries for the fuzzy, winged creatures. Millions of bees currently reside on the roofs of at least 7 luxury hotels in the city. Beekeeper Spencer Marshall has seen the devastating bee decline firsthand. He told CBS News: “When I started almost 50 years ago, if I lost [More]
By Ken Ham For example, research conducted on a supposedly 10-million-year-old fossilized snake shows that snakes haven’t changed in those 10 million years. Although the pigment from the snake deteriorated long ago, the shapes of the individual cells were actually preserved in this specimen. This allowed scientists to determine the coloring patterns of the snake’s skin. The researchers explain that snakes have three different types of pigment cells: “iridophores at the top, xanthophores in the middle, and melanophores at the bottom.” How these cells are distributed around the body determines patterns on the skin. Now, the scientists in this …read [More]
By Julie Fidler Researchers have found a common denominator in the brains of people with schizophrenia and autism: low levels of vitamin B12. For the study, researchers examined the brains of those who have already passed away, with age ranging from the beginning of birth to 80 years old. Researchers found that vitamin B12 levels were 10 times lower in the oldest people compared with the youngest, indicating that levels decline consistently over the course of many years. In the elderly, B12 levels decline naturally and protect the brain by slowing cellular reactions and the production of DNA-damaging chemicals known [More]
By Julie Fidler On March 8, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) voted to become the first school district of its size to require hormone- and antibiotic-free chicken in its school meals. More than 732,800 students are enrolled at LAUSD’s 1.274 schools. The full changes go into effect in fall 2017. The switch to “clean chicken” is the workings of the district’s Good Food Procurement resolution, spearheaded by school board president Steve Zimmer. The resolution requires that LAUSD fully adopt Good Food Purchasing Guidelines, as defined by the LA Food Policy Council. The guidelines stress the importance of local [More]

By Creation Moments Plant seeds are distributed by a number of ingenious methods, including wind, water, mammals and birds. Plants that rely upon these creatures to distribute their seeds often attract them with tasty fruit surrounding the seed. However, tasty fruit contains sugar and other substances that many other creatures also find inviting. Yes, the problem is, everybody likes sugar and that includes insects, molds and fungi, all of which are useless as seed distributors. Some plants make up for this problem by producing large amounts of fruit, just to ensure that some are reproduced. read more …read more Read [More]

By Admin By Jackie Newgent, RDN, CDN – eatright.org You’ve probably heard of prebiotics and probiotics, but do you know what they are? Nutrition research has pinpointed specific functional components of foods that may improve health, and prebiotics and probiotics are two such substances. Although they are available as dietary supplements, it is not necessary to use special pills, potions, cleanses or other concoctions to incorporate prebiotics and probiotics into your diet. These “nutrition boosters” are natural ingredients in everyday food. In fact, Kristi King, MPH, RDN, LD, CNSC, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, suggests focusing on [More]
By Julie Fidler A Penn State University researcher has created a genetically modified mushroom that is now at the center of controversy over GMO regulations of genetically modified creations. Researcher Yinong Yang developed a type of white button mushroom that looks identical to the type you’d buy in the produce section of a grocery store. The mushroom was created using CRISPR technology, which allows modification of genes with great precision. Put simply, CRISPR allows scientists to find an undesirable section of DNA, remove it, and, if they so choose, replace it with a more favorable gene slice. Yang used CRISPR [More]

By Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola The United States and New Zealand are the only two countries in the world that allow direct-to-consumer drug commercials on television. The only ones really benefiting from this scenario are the drug companies; from the consumer’s vantage point, the drawbacks far supersede the benefits. Part of the risk consumers face is rooted in deception. According to a content analysis study1 published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, 10 percent of claims made in drug ads were flat out false, and another 57 percent were misleading. Basically, two-thirds of the claims in any given [More]
By Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Gardening is one of life’s simple pleasures. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, digging in the dirt, planting and nurturing plant life fills a void in many people’s lives. Some call it spiritual while others describe it as therapeutic or stress relieving. Indeed, planting a garden lets you connect with nature in a way that you probably crave, even if you don’t exactly realize it. This is why many people find gardening to be addictive — in a good way. What starts as a few flowerpots on your patio may soon morph [More]
