Graveyard shift as a welder at a shipyard was one way for a poor student to make ends meet. On my first job fixing an aircraft carrier, sparks burned through all my clothes. It got so cold outside not even the blowtorch warmed me. I desperately needed a welder’s jacket, but a good one was made from tough leather and cost more than $100. I couldn’t afford it. I was about to begin work one evening when a gust of wind chilled me to the bone. Lord, please help me get through this shift. Read More: The Shift

With some free time on our hands before the Thanksgiving kickoff to the holiday season, my husband, Tony, and I took an afternoon drive. The trees along the winding streets were lit up in brilliant oranges, reds and golds that made me think of the sparkly Christmas decorations we would soon be hanging. We went all out with twinkling lights on the house, silver tinsel on the tree and ornaments of all kinds. We even had a Nativity to display outside—well, part of a Nativity. Tony’s mother had given us the set of lawn ornaments years ago. We had Joseph, Mary

12/21/24 “Dot, you’ll know God’s voice when you hear it,” Mama always told me. I needed to hear it now. It was an unusually cold evening in Jacksonville, Florida, but that wasn’t what made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I hurried down a dark, deserted street, eager to get to my Auntie’s place and escape the menacing hum of an old engine. The pale blue sedan was back. It had circled the block to pass me again—for the third time—slow, deliberate. Whatever the driver wanted from me, I didn’t want to find out. I wasn’t
