November 11, 2012, is a day Belinda Leal will never forget: the day her mother, Evangelina Garza, died. What happened next has left the doctors and nurses at McAllen Medical Center in south Texas baffled. But to Belinda and Evangelina—now very much alive—the explanation for the events that unfolded is quite clear…   Read More: Resurrected by a Hallelujah | Guideposts
Something bad had gone down. That was clear. Police and emergency vehicles jammed the parking lot outside the Fort Worth, Texas, McDonald’s. Officers took statements from traumatized witnesses. People huddled together. Parents held their children, weeping.   Detectives searched for evidence. Shell casings. How many shots had been fired? An APB was blasted out to every unit in the area. Man in a white shirt and black jeans. On foot. A crazed gunman. Still on the loose.   The scene was all too familiar. A reminder of how fragile life can be. One moment everything’s fine, boring, even, the next, [More]
I thanked God that morning for the water-stained ceiling tiles. They were as much a miracle to me as a clear blue sky. When I opened my eyes after a fitful night’s sleep and saw them above my hospital bed, I knew I was still alive. I was pretty sure there were no ceiling tiles in heaven.   I was 39 years old, and wasn’t likely to live out the week, much less see 40. As the morning dragged on, my family and the parishioners of my church came in and out of my room, praying for my recovery.   [More]
“Help! Please, somebody, help!” I looked out the window at the orchard, dark and shadowy in the pale moonlight. It was a woman’s voice. Close. But where? My son was at a friend’s house. It couldn’t be him watching a scary show on TV.   I lived in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, at the time, renting a garage apartment set back from our landlord’s house. The orchard and a small creek were behind us, not much else. Maybe someone fell in the water. Or was lost.   “Somebody, please, help me!” There it was again! A woman, desperate and very near. I [More]
Our car’s highbeams cut through the darkness of Maryland’s rural Route 50, heading westbound toward home. It was only 9 PM, but no other cars were around. Trees lining both sides of the road blocked out the moonlight, and the area was so sparsely populated, not even a streetlamp could be seen.   What a spooky stretch this route could be this late in the year, when the crowds no longer flocked to the beach. We should have left earlier, I thought. We would have had time to visit our friend in the nursing home and could have taken the [More]

New Year’s Eve, 1984. My husband, our two little boys and I were visiting my in-laws in Amarillo, Texas. We watched the ball drop and welcomed the new year together. Our original plan had been to stay over, but I wasn’t feeling up to it. We decided to drive the few hours back to our home in Clovis, New Mexico. It had been a long night. A long year, really.   Grandma Marjorie, whom I was really close to, had recently been hospitalized with pneumonia. She’d been in and out of the hospital all year with breathing issues. Watching her [More]
I’ve got to remember to call Tyler today.…The thought came to me while I was waking up, still hazy from sleep. Then I remembered—our son was gone.   It had been just more than two years since Tyler, a former Marine, had lost his battle with PTSD and taken his own life. Some days, like today, I’d still wake up thinking that it had all just been a terrible dream.   I got up and walked to the bookshelf we’d made into a small memorial for Tyler. It held items we displayed at his funeral—Marine Corps mementos, medals and a [More]
BEEP-BE-BE-BEEP!   A chorus of angry horns blared at me as I sat in my Altima, stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. It was a blazing hot August afternoon. Quite the time and place for my car’s entire electrical system to give out, including the power locks on my doors and windows. Trapped inside without air conditioning, I had to wait for a police officer to arrive to assist. He pried open my vehicle, shifted it to neutral, pushed me to a parking lot and called a tow truck to transport the car to a garage.   “It’s [More]
09/26/20   Intimate relationships of any kind are our greatest spiritual assignments. They are meant to mirror and magnify whatever is going on inside of us, serving as a reflection of our relationship with God. I thought I knew who I was before I got married. I thought I was grounded in my faith. I thought I had it all under control. I thought wrong.   For the first three years of my marriage, I would cringe whenever I saw what I perceived to be “happy couples” talking about their relationship. Their fairytale love anecdotes made me feel like my [More]
On Mother’s Day we celebrate all the miracles of motherhood.   But back in 1959, Peggy Rasmussen didn’t feel at all like celebrating. For Peggy, it was a reminder that she might never be a mother. She’d been praying and praying for a child, but it just didn’t seem like it was going to happen.   Then Peggy received a Mother’s Day message that spoke straight to her heart. Something that told her she was meant to be a mother after all.   My husband, Milton, and I were at church. So many happy families filled the pews, moms doting [More]
Katie Mahon is a miracle expert. She’s coauthor of the book The Miracle Chase and writes regularly about her hunt for God’s wonder in the world. She wasn’t always that way, though. For many years, Katie was a self-described miracle skeptic!   When she was a teenager, she escaped the clutches of a notorious serial killer in the most unbelievable of ways. But she had trouble labeling that incredible incident as miraculous.   Here Katie tells the story of that encounter. And how one morning, 15 years later, she finally woke up to that miracle from God.   Read More: [More]
My family was driving across Canada to Montreal where my husband, Ray, and I were going to be helping out a new church there.   Ray had gotten a head start with our daughter in a rental truck stuffed with our belongings. I took my two-year-old, John, in our family car, a hardtop convertible jam-packed from floor to ceiling with piles of books to use in our work. They hadn’t been able to fit in the truck.   We crossed into Ontario, driving along a narrow two-lane road. A heavy rain fell. Suddenly a truck veered into our lane. I [More]
Something about the sea can drive men mad. How else to explain all those stories of alluring mermaids, terrifying sea monsters and ghost ships? Like the legend of the Flying Dutchman, forever floating above the waves, its long-dead crew delivering dire warnings to the spooked sailors of passing vessels.   As a writer and sailor, I find these stories fascinating, but the name of my 35-foot sailboat reflects how I feel about them–Tall Tales.   My buddy Tristan was like me, which is why I thought he was pulling my leg when he revealed his own unlikely tale. He had [More]
09/26/20   “It’s astounding just how few Americans in all age groups hold a standard Biblical worldview.”  Admin   Although 61% of American millennials consider themselves to be Christian, just 2% of them were found to hold a biblical worldview, according to a recent study released by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University.   A biblical worldview, as previously defined by Barna, includes believing that absolute moral truths exist, and that such truth is defined by the Bible, as well as firm belief in six specific religious views. Those views are that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life; [More]
09/26/20   As more evidence seemingly suggests, the Judeo-Christian values are essential contributing factors to both social stability and well being of families.   According to a report The New York Times, a study from the Institute for Family Studies and the Wheatley Institution found that “the happiest of all American wives consider themselves religious conservatives.”   As The Blaze noted, the finding didn’t go down with liberals.   A New York Times Opinion tweet read:   “It turns out that the happiest of all wives in America are religious conservatives, followed by their religious progressive counterparts.”   Read More: Liberals Implode as [More]
09/23/20   Actor Jim Caviezel is promising big things with the next installment of The Passion of the Christ.   The star of the original 2004 movie, in which he played Jesus, told Breitbart News he’s received the third draft for the sequel from director Mel Gibson.   The sequel, called The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, doesn’t have a release date yet but Caviezel expects it to be a hit when it does finally land in theaters.   “Mel Gibson just sent me the third picture, the third draft. It’s coming,” he told Breitbart.   “It’s going to be the [More]

And you can do it all (and so much more)! That’s because the same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead, empowered the early church to fulfill Christ’s commission and kept Paul content in his calling will undoubtedly strengthen you to do what you never thought you could. Don’t know where to begin? These three life-tested steps bring God’s supernatural strength for obedience and victory to [More]
09/23/20   “A good lesson from the Old Testament.” Admin   How do we truly seek the Lord? This question has been marinating in my thoughts for the past few weeks. The answer seems pretty straight forward, but there is more to it than meets the eye. As I was reading through 1 Samuel recently, the Lord showed me something I had not noticed before. In the story of Samuel, I usually focus on what God and Samuel are doing, without stepping back and seeing the big picture. This time, I saw the bigger picture. Samuel is the last of [More]
09/23/20   “Something we all should be doing in these chaotic times.” Admin   The Lord recently spoke to me and said, “Tighten down.” I then had a prophetic vision of a wrench tightening down nuts on a bolt to hold them in place.   What I believe the Lord was revealing to me is that there are many believers who are not consistent in the basic practices of walking with God. There are many who do not spend time in the Word of God. They are also not found in the secret place of prayer and do not live [More]
09/23/20   In Egypt, converting from Islam to Christianity is seen as a betrayal of your family and heritage. In Muslim families, any member who leaves their Muslim beliefs and upbringing subjects themselves to tremendous pressure from their immediate and extended family to renounce Christ and return to Islam. Some are locked up, others are isolated, tortured or even killed.   Recently, our Open Doors team in Egypt met with a new believer who shared his awe-inspiring testimony of how God used his cousin’s conversion to remove the scales from his own eyes.   Read More: God’s Word pierces heart [More]
09/23/20   In the past two decades, Open Doors has received almost weekly reports of Christians in Iran imprisoned for leading house churches or being part of a house church. When the Iranian revolution of 1979 established a hardline Islamic regime, the next 20 years ushered in a wave of persecution that continues today.  All missionaries were kicked out, evangelism was outlawed, Bibles in the Persian or Farsi language were banned and several pastors killed.   Just recently, appeals for two convicted Christians, Victor bet-Tamaraz and his wife Shamiram Isavi, were rejected with both receiving summons to report to [More]
09/22/20   “Timely commentary from Michael.” Admin   There isn’t very much that is redeemable about Voltaire, but you’ve got to hand it to the old powdered wig wearing curmudgeon, he did come up with some doozies. There is one quote of his that I’ve been mulling over the past few days, and that is, those who can make you believe absurdities can also make you commit atrocities.   Some things don’t ring true until they do. It’s as simple as that, once you get past all the fluff. I remember reading this quote in my youth, and it rang [More]
09/22/20   Archaeologists have discovered three 2,700-year-old relics of the ancient Kingdom of Judah during ongoing excavations in Jerusalem.   The three decorated column heads bear the same style as others of the kingdom, a symbol of the Davidic dynasty. Experts believe the column heads date from the time of King Hezekiah, a descendant of King David.   “This discovery is really a once-in-a-lifetime discovery,” City of David Foundation Vice President Doron Spielman told The Jerusalem Post.   Read More: ‘Once-in-a-lifetime discovery’: Archaeologists uncover pieces of palace connected to King David
I squinted. Was that a pothole?   Turning the wheel, I guided the car around potential danger. It was early, still dark, and the back roads that wind over and around our creeks in Fredericksburg, Virginia, were tricky even in daylight. The children were at home, still asleep, but I was driving to meet my carpool, all of us government workers in Alexandria, about an hour north.   A hurricane had just blown through our area, but apart from getting to work on time, I wasn’t worried. We were fortunate, with no damage to our property, and most of the [More]
09/17/20   Pastor Frank Amedia is known for his bold and accurate prophetic words. In fact, he had the opportunity to share one with President Trump before the 2016 election that I detail in my book, God, Trump and the 2020 Election. This year, the Lord has given Frank insight into what he says are three shifts. I invited Frank onto my God, Trump and COVID-19 podcast to share his recent prophecies related to these shifts and what they mean for our country.   Frank told me, “As you and I were even uncovering the mystery of the COVID back [More]
09/17/20   After nearly 50 years of serving as senior pastor at First Baptist Church Atlanta, Charles Stanley announced during a pre-recorded streaming service on Sunday that he is stepping down. The megachurch said Stanley will be replaced by Dr. Anthony George.   “Earlier this month, I informed the board that I felt the time had come for me to step down as senior pastor,” Stanley said. “I have many wonderful memories. But as much as I love being your pastor, I know in my heart this season has come to an end.”   Read More: Charles Stanley stepping down [More]
