My husband, Don, retired 10 years ago. Soon after, we bought a three-quarter-ton Chevy Silverado and a fully equipped travel trailer, and set off in search of adventure. Our eventual goal was to visit all 48 continental states and Canada. We saw New England and New Mexico, and everything in between. One night, deep in Wisconsin wilderness, I marveled at how safe we always felt, no matter how far from home we roamed. “God’s angels are with us,” I said, and Don nodded, knowing I was right. Once in Colorado, Don wanted to ride a 19th-century train between Durango and [More]
Summer was supposed to be free of worries for a high school grad like me. No studying, no homework–at least not till I went away to college in the fall. I even had a good secretarial job at an industrial company so I could go off with some money in my pocket. But one afternoon, while I tried to concentrate on entering orders into my computer, doubts crowded in: I’d never been on my own before. I was shy. I’d always lived in the same small town. How would I make it out there in the big, scary world? I [More]
After my three-year-old son, Zac, was diagnosed with leukemia, I had questions for the doctors–and for God. Will you keep Zac safe? Will he be okay? Zac checked into Hemby Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. One night he had a seizure. All my fears came to the surface. When I finally fell asleep in the hospital room, I dreamed there were many children surrounding me. One little boy had chicken pox. Some kids were giggling. “Do you have any candy?” one little girl asked. Read More  The Angels of Hemby Hospital – Guideposts.

If you’re dismayed that one in five Americans (20 percent) are “nones” — people who claim no particular religious identity — brace yourself. How does 38 percent sound? That’s what religion researcher David Kinnaman calculates when he adds “the unchurched, the never-churched and the skeptics” to the nones. He calls his new category “churchless,” the same title Kinnaman has given his new book. By his count, roughly four in 10 people living in the continental United States are actually “post-Christian” and “essentially secular in belief and practice.” If asked, the “churchless” would likely check the “Christian” box on a survey, [More]
Unfortunately the typical American diet consists largely of toxic and acid-forming foods like refined grains, processed sugars, artificial sweeteners, pasteurized juices, fried foods, meat and dairy – the list goes on. Combine all of this food with a lack of sleep, stress and pharmaceutical drugs to top it all off and it’s no wonder why people are being diagnosed with various diseases at an alarming rate. It is important to maintain a proper pH balance. All foods in nature contain both acid and alkaline-forming elements and according to the Conscious Living Center, balance can be either achieved or prevented as [More]

Update 04/13/21: Pictures! The day after the accident I went to the garage where the vehicle had been towed and took 4 pictures of it. Although I can’t find the original 4 pictures, I came across a Xerox copy I made of the pictures while going through an old box of items. I remember making some copies so I could give them to a few people to show them what the car looked like after the accident. Needless to say, after seeing the pictures, they were dumbfounded that I had escaped unharmed except for a small bump on my shin.”  [More]

In July, as the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) drove out more than 100,000 Christians in the area of Mosul in just a few days, many became newly aware of Islamic extremism at its worst. In Part I, we shared about Islamic extremist groups in the Middle East. Christians also face extraordinary dangers in both Africa and the Philippines. Christians working in more than fourteen countries have indicated an increase in terrorist organizations that specifically target Christian populations. In Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, groups like al-Qaeda and Ansar al-Shariah are known for their violence. In Libya’s capital, Benghazi, Ansar al-Shariah [More]
Around the world, the advance of Islamic extremist groups is creating increasing difficulties for Christians, as Islamists seek territory and political power. Islamic groups often terrorize Christians by chasing them off of their property, appropriating Christian properties, and even kidnapping or killing family members. The increasing threat of extremism was highlighted this year with the advance of the Islamic State (IS) terror group from Syria into Iraq. Taking advantage of the war between Muslim rebels and the Syrian government, IS militants begin seizing control of cities in both Syria and Iraq and declared a “caliphate” in June 2014. As celebrations were [More]
“I was in the desert alone, lost. As far as the horizon, there was nothing in sight but sand. I felt the sand on my bare feet. Then I saw something extraordinary. In the midst of that barrenness, an immense wooden cross emerged from the earth, rising up with sand spilling from it back to earth.” So begins a dream narrative posted by Bosnian Muslim teenager Emina Emlonic. A dream about Jesus. It continues: “I felt then a spectator in my own dream, and the sight of the cross gave me neither fear nor joy. But I was a curious [More]
New York City never gets dark at night, not the way it does in the country. That’s one thing that always fascinates me whenever I make the seven-hour trip from Lynchburg, Virginia. But by the time my two friends and I hopped off the Circle Line boat tour, the meatpacking district was a ghost town. The bright lights of Times Square, where we were heading for dinner, seemed far away. “Doesn’t the city make you nervous?” one of my friends asked as we walked to the bus terminal. The Big Apple could be overwhelming for folks not used to it, [More]
On bright, clear summer days on our family farm I wasted happy hours on the wooden swing hanging from the maple tree. Something about flying through the air, trying to touch the clouds, made me feel closer to God. One afternoon I was halfway to the sky when I heard a voice. “You’d better get out of the swing before it breaks,” the voice said. My legs stopped pumping and I turned around to see who was there. No one. Mom was inside. Read More  Heeding a Heavenly Voice – Guideposts.
Burga, my 50-pound Rottweiler, jumped out of the pickup truck when we got to Boynton Canyon in Sedona, our go-to spot for a late afternoon stroll. “This might be our last walk for a while, Burga,” I said as I led her to our favorite trail. I was scheduled for foot surgery the next day and overwhelmed with worries. Would things be worse than the doctor initially thought? Would I fully recover use of my foot? Would the surgical staff be well rested before the operation? My fears were out of control! When Burga and I got closer to our [More]
Six years after we were married, my 29-year-old husband was fighting leukemia. Pain dulled Chris’ blue eyes; he was barely able to move without help. Doctors offered little hope, and for months I slept on a cot alongside his bed at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. At 3:00 a.m., I was shaken awake by an alarmed nurse. “We can’t find Chris!” she exclaimed. My eyes darted to his bed. The sheet was turned back; the bed empty. How? I jumped up and raced past the nurses’ station outside the room, then ran down the hall. As I [More]
In this excerpt from Their Mysterious Ways Too, a woman learns to trust God’s timing. By Phyllis Hobe In my rural area I often see barn cats hunting in the fields. In exchange for keeping the rodent population down they get food and shelter from farmers, but they aren’t comfortable with people. If they wander onto my property, they run off as soon as they see me. One morning, however, I found a cat curled up beneath the shrubs in front of my house. It was pregnant, a pretty little gray cat with black stripes. I brought out some food, [More]
No doubt these are distressing times. Possibly those of which the apostle Paul prophesied (2 Tim. 3:1). As wars and rumors of wars abound, Christian persecution ramps up, deadly plagues threaten our well-being and the economy gets thrust into limbo, we’re all searching for solutions. Every two years or so we pin our hopes upon the election of some political figure. Sound bytes promising protection and prosperity fill our airwaves. And the solution for these times is offered with the institution of an ideology. But inevitably, history repeats itself. The man or woman we counted on to lift us from [More]
This week’s episode of VOMRadio is live online, featuring an interview with Gracia Burnham. Martin and Gracia Burnham were serving as missionaries in the Philippines when they went away for a few days together to celebrate their anniversary. Those few days turned into a year in the jungle when they were kidnapped by radical Muslim terrorists. In this interview, Gracia shares how she wrestled with God and even with her own faith during those dark days of captivity, and how she experienced the prayers of God’s people, even as Martin was killed during a rescue attempt. Gracia bears witness to [More]

“Not surprising this is originating in California one of the main states on the cutting edge of moral decay. We’ll see more things like this as the world goes deeper into spiritual darkness.”  Admin The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) became a pioneer in the culture of death last week when it began offering a free online course teaching students about the ins and outs of abortion – from procedures to advocacy. “The agenda of the left is to brainwash kids with evolution and breakdown their morals to transform them into the same kind of godless heathens they are.”  Admin Parents and legislators are outraged by a University of Hawaii program that gives gift cards to middle school students for participating in a graphic sex-ed program. Caution: this story includes terms some may find offensive. The program is called “Pono Choices.” “Pono” is the Hawaiian word for “right,” and the website states that it’s the first curriculum created for Hawaiian children ages 11 to 13. “It’s sad that most people take better care of their car and house than they do their body. Talk about misplaced priorities.”  Admin A new study finds that most U.S. adults fail to meet recommended daily levels of 10 key nutrients, and those with disabilities have even worse nutrition than average. An estimated 10 to 25 percent of U.S. adults fit into one or more category of disability, from those who have difficulties with activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing and eating, to those who cannot use their legs or struggle to accomplish routine tasks, such as money [More]
“Besides drinking tomato juice, putting them in smoothies is another great way to incorporate them into your diet.”  Admin Just one serving a day of tomato-based foods can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. In fact, research has shown that tomatoes could be an ‘effective alternative’ to dangerous medications. Scientists have said that tomato juice and cooked tomatoes can have the same benefits as statins for patients battling against high cholesterol levels or high blood pressure. And just a pint of juice a day could be enough to help many patients. The secret lies in high levels [More]
