” A great lesson in prayer and faith.”  Admin Some years ago evangelist Clyde Dupin was coming to our town, and I was asked to do local publicity for the important event. In the middle of writing lots of articles about the upcoming crusade, I received a phone call from a worldwide ministry in Texas. The media director wanted to interview me, in person, for a full-time feature writing position. I had been waiting for that opportunity for a long time. The problem was…I didn’t have the extra money for an airline ticket. The ministry had agreed to pay for [More]
I awoke at 2:00 a.m. to find my eight-year-old Noah in tears at my bedside. “I miss B.B.” He signed to me. Noah is deaf, and B.B. is his best friend and his cat. She has slept snuggled up to him for the past four years, and only a few days after we moved to our new home in Kansas, B.B. disappeared. My heart ached for Noah, as only a mother’s can when she knows her child is hurting. The day we realized B.B. had somehow gotten out of the house, we began right away to search for her. We [More]
Just one semester before my husband, Dave, was supposed to graduate from college, it looked as though he would have to drop out instead. He had been laid off from his job on the night shift at the auto factory, and if he didn’t find a new position by the time his unemployment benefits ran out we wouldn’t be able to pay for his tuition. Dave was studying to become a teacher. “Maybe I can find a temporary job until June,” I said. That wouldn’t be easy, though. Our 14-month-old daughter, Kristy, had bad asthma. We couldn’t trust a babysitter [More]
I’ll start by warning you that you might want to grab a tissue for this one. I’ve watched this video 8-10 times and I’ve cried every time I’ve seen it. WTVR in Richmond, Virginia, shared this wonderful story that originated with a Facebook video by Becky Miller. The Texas mom posted about her daughter, Bailey, who had been paralyzed for 11 days from the waist down—and there were no answers as to why. Just to set the scene for you, on the day this video was taken, Bailey was waiting on her favorite nurse, and she had a big surprise [More]
For months my husband, Mark, and I had been saving up to get a third family car so that our daughter Anne would have something to drive when she turned 16. With four children, another car—and another driver—in the family would be a godsend. Then came the bad news: Our well had dried up, and so did our savings when we drilled a new one. “I guess I’ll just have to pray for a car,” Anne said when we told her. Anne wasn’t just being a good sport. She really prayed for that car. “I’m praying specifically, just like you [More]
I have always prayed about everything. Big things, small things—they all matter. I trust that God takes an interest in everything going on in my life. But even I didn’t know what to say when my teenaged son, Alan, announced late one night, clear out of the blue, that he was going to bake a lemon meringue pie. Really? “Alan, that’s ridiculous,” I said. “It’s bedtime. I just cleaned the kitchen and did the dishes. Besides, you have school tomorrow. If you want to bake a pie, bake it when you get home in the afternoon. We won’t be able [More]
A coastal wind ruffled my hair as I sat outside our small stucco tract house in Lompoc, California, and I wondered for the millionth time if we should move. The house seemed to squeeze tighter around us as our three active sons, ages thirteen, ten and six, kept growing. I longed for more room. My husband Patrick and I often looked at larger homes, yearning yet hesitant. The question hounded me again: Should we try to move? I prayed for guidance. While reading my Bible one day my heart quickened when I came across Psalm 18:19 (NIV), which read, “He [More]
Has God ever impressed on you to do a big project for Him, and you worked hard on it for years—and yet it seemed like nothing was happening, and God was a million miles away? That’s where I’ve been lately with a huge dream God placed on my heart. Some good things have happened, but the big provisions from Him haven’t arrived yet. I’ll be honest, I’ve been a bit discouraged. Then during my devotions recently, I read a verse in Isaiah 7:11, “Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God.” Those words glared from the page at [More]
In this story from January 1982, the acclaimed actress tells of her first encounter with God, when a prayerful plea received a response more immediate than she could have expected. When I was 18 years old, I had an experience that was to affect the rest of my life. My parents were divorced. Starved for family love, I ran away at 16 to marry my childhood sweetheart. At 17, I had my precious son. Then the war came along, and soon my young husband was drafted and sent overseas. During his long absence, I lived with his very religious parents in [More]
Update 04/13/21: Pictures! The day after the accident I went to the garage where the vehicle had been towed and took 4 pictures of it. Although I can’t find the original 4 pictures, I came across a Xerox copy I made of the pictures while going through an old box of items. I remember making some copies so I could give them to a few people to show them what the car looked like after the accident. Needless to say, after seeing the pictures, they were dumbfounded that I had escaped unharmed except for a small bump on my shin.”  [More]
In this excerpt from Their Mysterious Ways Too, a woman learns to trust God’s timing. By Phyllis Hobe In my rural area I often see barn cats hunting in the fields. In exchange for keeping the rodent population down they get food and shelter from farmers, but they aren’t comfortable with people. If they wander onto my property, they run off as soon as they see me. One morning, however, I found a cat curled up beneath the shrubs in front of my house. It was pregnant, a pretty little gray cat with black stripes. I brought out some food, [More]
“Miracle answer to prayer.” Admin Her grandfather’s orchard was the family’s pride and joy. Now they were in danger of losing it to the weather. “I’ve never seen cold weather last so long!” Mom said when I arrived at the family ranch near Mariposa, California. Since Dad died she was on her own up there. Normally she was able to manage the place by herself, but this January had brought unusually frigid weather for California, and she needed my help. “Don’t worry,” I told her. “I’ll load more wood in the stoves. Then I’ll check on the oranges.” The small [More]
It had been a long winter—one fraught with icy winds and too many health and financial problems. So when the sun peeked from behind the clouds I decided to take a walk before heading to the middle school for my tutoring job.The sky was so bright I’d stopped to trade my regular lenses for my sunglasses from the car. Sunlight swallowed me up and I lost track of time. I checked my watch. I’ll have to hurry!I rushed inside, gathered my things and jumped in the car. I was almost at school when I reached into my purse for my [More]
“Mom, I lost my retainer!” my son, Joey, said to me over the phone one afternoon. “Calm down,” I told him, although I was really talking to myself. “I’ll leave work early and come by the school. We’ll find it.” I’d do anything not to have to replace the expensive device. “I took it out to eat lunch and set it on my tray,” Joey said when I got to the school. “I forgot it was there when I dumped my tray into the trash can.” By the time Joey realized what he’d done, the whole school had been through [More]
t was Sunday evening. The sun was setting on a choppy, cool day on Florida’s Indian River. I’d skippered a Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel for eight years. My crew and I were civilian volunteers, but the US Coast Guard relied on us to keep the folks who were fishing or sailing these waters safe. Patrolling this river never felt like work to me. Besides being outside on the water, I liked knowing I was watching out for anyone who might need help. So far I’d rescued a dozen or so people in trouble. My mother might have said I acted [More]
Hearing aids cost thousands, but they sure are tiny. I didn’t even realize mine was missing until a phone conversation with my sister in California. I found myself switching the phone from one ear to the other, struggling to hear. How annoying. “Love ya, but I must go find my hearing aid, okay?” I told my sister. I hadn’t even bought insurance on it! Around the toilet, under the pillows, inside every nook and cranny, along every single cabinet. It was definitely not in the house. Read More Here
Applause thundered throughout the theater as I clasped the hands of my cast mates and we all took a bow. A standing ovation—I couldn’t believe it. It seemed like yesterday I was a chubby, timid girl in high school who hid behind Jane Austen novels. Now I had a slimmed-down figure, was about to enter medical school and my gorgeous boyfriend had asked me to marry him. And I’d just sung a solo in a musical theater production in front of a theater full of people: “All Good Gifts Around Us Are Sent From Heaven Above.” I felt on top [More]
For our first Christmas in a new state, far from the rest of our family, I wanted to get my daughters, Tiffany and Jasmine, something special.“What do you want from Santa this year?” I asked them.“Bicycles!” they replied in unison. Clearly they had their hopes set. But when I went over the monthly bills, I saw I couldn’t afford one bike, let alone two. I took the matter to my head accountant: Lord, would it be fair to my landlord to be late with the rent this month? Just this once? Read More Christmas Angels Help Mother Pay for Gifts [More]
Liz had separated from her husband. She was emotionally devastated, and the reality of keeping her two preschool daughters fed and cared for had all but shattered her spirit. She believed in God, but where was he? She felt so alone. Reluctantly, she applied to get financial aid until she could find a job. A few days later, Liz realized that she had no money and no food in the cupboards. She checked her purse and pockets just in case, but there was no money anywhere, no way to buy even a small bag of groceries. Read More Hope and [More]
Even if my daughter was 21, I was anxious over her taking her first road trip all on her own. I’d gone to the mall to distract myself. Still, my mind was on Dana. The trip had gone well, but she was making the long drive home this afternoon. I wished she was home already. I wandered through a department store and felt a command: Pray for her. Pray for her now. I stopped short, letting people walk around me while I concentrated on Dana. God, watch over her while she’s at the wheel. Let her know you’re with her. [More]
With only three weeks before we had to move, Mike and I still had nowhere to go. The house we were renting was up for sale, we couldn’t afford to buy our own and the right rental was just nowhere to be found. I filled the kitchen sink with dishes, wishing I could clean up life’s other messes as easily. What if we can’t find a place? I thought. We’ll be out on the street in no time.
