Federal civil rights law in America prohibits job discrimination on the basis of sex. Well, last week the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, a federal appeals court in Chicago, ruled that sex also includes the expanded definition of sexual orientation. This ruling forbids discrimination “against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees” for that circuit.
The Seventh Circuit, a leader among the other circuits, is not known to be very liberal, so it seems likely that other circuits will follow this ruling and will decide to rewrite federal law, as the Seventh Circuit did. Inevitably this issue will make …read more
