Fresh off the ground-breaking success of the Christian movie “God’s Not Dead,” the stars have aligned to bring a new, faith-packed film to America with the title “Do You Believe?”

And by “stars,” I mean an strong cast of Hollywood talent – perhaps the most talent ever assembled for an explicitly Christian film: movie stars, like Sean Astin of “Lord of the Rings” and Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino, TV legends Lee Majors and Cybill Shepherd and even football star Brian “the Boz” Bosworth, who actually turns in a solid performance. Recognizable faces like Ted McGinley from dozens of popular TV shows and Alexa Vega of “Spy Kids” fame fill out the cast. The film also features a stunning, break-out performance by Aaron Smith, a.k.a. Shwayze, in the central role of “Pretty Boy.”“

Do You Believe?” represents a major step forward in Christian filmmaking. Gone are the church volunteers and amateur-hour pastors in the cast who scream “cheesy” every time they’re on camera. Gone are the half-baked special effects. The production values are finally starting to catch up with Hollywood.

For Christians looking to watch a film that stirs the heart and challenges us to reexamine ourselves, like a good sermon will often do, “Do You Believe?” is a well-made, top-notch production.

But that’s also part of the movie’s problem.
