“The 12 Biggest Lies” focuses on the topic of truth, and the logic of the experts who exhort viewers is hard to argue with. Hosted by Kevin Sorbo, this documentary makes it crystal clear that some things are true whether a person agrees or not. The film opens with the example that kids are often devastated when they learn they have been lied to. We are also given a Francis Bacon quote: “People prefer to believe what they prefer to be true.” Another powerful quote is by Winston Churchill: “Truth is precious.” Or, as Michael Spence, Dean of Students at the School of Biblical Evangelism, says, “Truth is telling it like it is.”

The topic of truth is examined in the light of biblical truth. Truth is powerful for, as Andrei Sakharov said, “I once believed the bomb was the most powerful weapon on Earth but I discovered that truth is the most powerful weapon.” And as author Michael Coren is quoted, “Truth offends people.” But if it offends people, does that prevent it from being the truth?

The documentary makes nice use of humor. When people tell author Michael Curen that there is no such thing as absolute truth, he asks, “Are you absolutely sure?” Simple but profound truths are included as well. When Mark Spence is told, “You shouldn’t judge,” he asks, “Isn’t that a judgment?”

The film focuses on the truth, its consequences, the depravity of man and his need for a savior. If no laws are required in the world, what would a lawless soccer game look like (as an example)? Yet those who follow God’s laws find “truth” in them. The theme seems to be what Brent Thompson, UP Legal Services for Insight for Living, says: “Respect other people’s opinion—but somebody’s right and somebody isn’t.” This documentary covers a dozen lies, including the idea that the world is over populated so abortion is not a bad thing, that Americans are greedy and self-centered, that Jesus was just a good man, and nine others.

We are delighted to award “The 12 Biggest Lies” our “Faith-Friendly” Seal for ages 12+. It is a powerful look at today’s world, its lies, but the constant truth of the Bible.
