Since early 2021, anomalous clots in people’s blood have been increasingly reported. These clots are distinguished from usual blood clots found by embalmers due to their elasticity, persistence and resistance to fragmentation. As such, they represent a distinct, previously unrecognised intravascular phenomenon.
As these clots are a fairly recent phenomenon, it has been difficult to give them a single label and over the years they have been referred to by several names including fibrous white clots, rubbery clots or amyloid structures. Up until now, the composition of the clots has been largely theoretical. But a new study provides some tangible evidence as to what they’re made of.
