was at Walmart a few months back, restocking my pantry, when I noticed something. Half the cans on my own shelves at home had been sitting there expired for years. Nothing looked wrong with them, but the dates were long gone, and I stood there doing the math on how much money that actually was.
That got me thinking. Could I feed them to my dogs? Would they work for the chickens? Could old canned food turn into fuel, or fertilizer for the garden? Or was I just supposed to toss the whole stack and eat the loss?
That’s when I ran into the term upcycling, taking something that’s done with its original job and turning it into something else entirely.
